PHOTOGRAPHY STUDY INFORMATION.

LESSON TYPE.

All Photo classes are PRIVATE [1 STUDENT AND THE TEACHER].

SO - STUDY WHAT YOU LIKE!!

Because the lessons are private, we can study YOUR favourite styles of photography, and photograph the subjects that YOU like!

[This is within the practical limits of location, time and budget of course....

A photo of Angelina Jollie riding nude on an elephant on location in front of the Taj Mahal might be a tad difficult to arrange in a 2 hr lesson in Osaka. ha ha!!].

STYLE OF LESSONS.

As I have spent my entire life connected with photography [my father Jeff Carter was a famous photographer. I was independently taking well composed photos and hand processing the black and white film and hand printing enlargements from age 15. Then from age 21 I became a professional photographer.]

So, in your Photo lessons I will pass on what skills and knowledge I have aquired over approximately 25 years.

This will include developing your Photographic Eye [seeing a 'good photo'], the technical skill and methodology to be able to QUICKLY get the results you want in practical situations.

This is hard to simply write down here. To give you confidence in my teaching: I love photography. I love TEACHING [so I now own a SCHOOL]. I previously taught Photography in Australia. All my students say my lessons are very helpful and 'easy to understand' including the [limited] technical info I need to teach you. DON'T WORRY: there is NOT much techno stuff to learn! ....

MOST of what I teach is about 'SEEING' 'CONNECTIONS' 'PRACTICAL METHODOLOGY', 'CONCEPTS MADE INTO PHOTO IMAGES, etc.

For post production [manipulating and photo finishing your digital photo images] GCG STUDENTS use Adobe Photoshop CC.

We will concentrate on learning what you need.

We will focus on the 'project' we are working on [with no other students to distract us].

Because it is YOUR PRIVATE LESSON [unlike a 'GROUP' or 'CLASS' lesson], extended THEMES, CONCEPTS, PROJECTS are possible.

Also, they CAN develop over time, change, be added to..... so the lessons are truly 'organic' and 'spontaneous' [within learning how it all works/fits together etc].

And lessons go at YOUR PACE [Hey! We are all individuals! We learn different stuff at different speeds. That's cool!]

WHEN CAN I STUDY?

FLEXIBLE LESSON LENGTH

& MONTHLY LESSON DAYS AND TIMES

Lessons are usually either:

2 hour lessons [so x 4 within the calender month = total: 8 hours]

OR

4 hour lessons [so x 2 within the calender month = total: 8 hours]

However, ANY COMBO of lesson length [in multiples of 1 hour] is fine.

PLUS:

CAN I SKIP A WEEK?

[(Nervously) "Ah ... teacher... ah.. I am going to Tokyo this week.... Ah... no lesson this week - ok?????"]

As said: you pay for 8 hours in each month - so you would just make up that week's lesson the next week.... for example, have a 4 hour lesson.... HEY! that means we could go somewhere further away to take photos, for example.]

So - YES - you can 'skip' a week!

ADD UNUSED LESSONS for this month to NEXT month??

That's OK!

However, for purely practical reasons, you can't spread unused lessons over several months/years. Its hard to keep track of what you have used versus what you have paid for but not used yet.

Sporadic gaps of a week or so don't inhibit your learning [in fact, occassional 'breathing spaces' might be a good idea!].

However, generally the GCG students come every week and every month - that's why they improve.

The Sky's the Limit!

Already many GCG students have risen to the top:

A few examples:

Last year a GCG GUITAR student successfully auditioned and was ACCEPTED

to the World's #1 MUSIC COLLEGE - the Berkley School of Music in Boston [USA].

Other guitar students now perform locally.

Next month 2 USJ pro performers [singers] will start studying GUITAR at GCG.

Some of my PHOTO students now work professionally.

Other photo students have won photo competitions.

One English student now has his PYCHOLOGY PAPERS published internationally in ENGLISH!!

Another English student, who is a serious ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST PAINTER has improved her English to the level

that she is currently living in Germany [where throughout Europe English is now the official language].

Currently, I have a PHOTO student who aspires to be a professional writer/photographer and is studying specifically to aquire the skills to illustrate his writing with pro level photos.

He is also learning layout and design so he can produce complete page layouts of his illustrated writings for sale to magazines.

YA GOTTA BE IN IT TO WIN IT!

[NOTE: to ensure your level DOES go up, you DO need to come consistently at GCG.

So - you CAN'T just come in 'dribs and drabs' - a lesson here, a long break, then a lesson there....

GCG is for SERIOUS PEOPLE who genuinely WANT TO IMPROVE.

And we don't apologise for this attitude.

from Goth Carter]

WANT TO STUDY MORE THAN 8 HOURS PER MONTH?

Great! I can create a package of lessons to suit you [and your budget].

_________________________________________________________________________

NOTE FOR JAPANESE STUDENTS:

Because the lessons are spoken in ENGLISH,

this is a GREAT CHANCE to IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH while you are studying PHOTOGRAPHY.

[I speak intermediate level Japanese, so if it helps our communication, I might sometimes speak in Japanese - if you want.]

_________________________________________________________________________

For all students:

CHANGE TO A DIFFERENT CLASS - OK!!

LOTS OF CHOICES!

If you have interest in studying GUITAR, LAYOUT & DESIGN, or ENGLISH

you can change [even for only a month] to those classes. Study for as long as you like. Switch again! No problem!

Lessons at GCG are SO VERSATILE!! Yeah!!

PHOTO LESSON INFO [CONT'D]

FREE SERVICE.

If you DON'T have a camera [or only a 'toy' one - haha!] I can help you buy a camera and lens to suit your needs and budget.

This would be done in my free time [NOT your lesson time] and is a free service which I offer to my students

[Its also available for my Guitar students who need a guitar].

WHY?

I actually care about [and want] your photography to IMPROVE! [And YOUR guitar playing if guitar lessons, likewise your English if an English lesson].

IF you are ENJOYING doing it, you will put more time and effort into it! Right?!!

Let's face it - if you don't have (at least) reasonable quality equipment, it's hard to enjoy yourself when using it!!

gcg photo students groove!

The Photography Lessons include:

PRE-PRODUCTION [planning and prep]

Getting equipment ready to take photos

[Sounds obvious, but almost NO-ONE does this. Remember: using a camera on 'AUTO' is not the same as using a camera on 'MANUAL'].

When applicable: PLANNING to take photos

[Ex: CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT, STORY BOARDING, CHOOSING LOCATIONS AND SHOOTING TIMES (for best light or availability of location),

ORGANISING TALENT (models or other people who will be 'on camera'),

considering the FINAL OUTPUT IMAGES (size, quality, appropriate for the MEDIA - whether for PRINT or INTERNET].

PRODUCTION [TAKING PHOTOS]

Developing your Artistic Eye

Using your camera on Manual Mode.

Setting the camera's functions to facilitate taking photos is different situations.

Making decisions: think quickly & clearly about "What am I photographing?" ...

... then CAPTURING the 'answer' as a photo.

When possible: Setting up the shots.

To do that you will need to learn how to:

CONTROL THE MEDIUM:

How to hold the camera.

Use manual focus & exposure [ 'exposure' - what is 'correct exposure' anyway?].

Use Depth-of-field.

The effects and properties of lens.

Appropiate choice of ISO [or film ASA].

Improve your thinking [your ARTISTIC EYE] regarding:

Appropriateness of backgrounds behind subjects.

Appropriate lighting [natural, available light and studio lighting].

Etc, etc, etc...

AND I SAY AGAIN :

Make decisions: think quickly & clearly about "What am I photographing?"

Then CAPTURE the 'answer' as a photo.

DON'T WORRY!!

YES! I agree!

With ALL THE ABOVE THINGS TO CONSIDER, choices and decisions become much more complex!

YET:

Once you DO get control over the 'MEDIA' - in this case, the CAMERA, it does get easier!

MOST IMPORTANTLY - YOU WILL GET CONSISTENTLY BETTER, MORE STRIKING IMAGES!

POST PRODUCTION

[PHOTO FINISHING. CREDITING. PREPARING IMAGES APPROPRIATELY FOR THE SELECTED VIEWING MEDIA].

How to use Adobe PHOTOSHOP CS3 to photo finish your images.

How to use Adobe ILLUSTRATOR CS3 to make layouts to present your photos.

How to use a FLAT ART and FILM SCANNER - to imput flat art and images on film [both negative or positive]

into your computer in DIGITAL FORM.

NOTE: The 'WET DARKROOM' [Photo print room] has now been almost replaced with photo finishing using a computer program.

So, GCG does not currently have an active wet darkroom.

GCG USES PRO PROGRAMS

BECAUSE LEARNING PROGRAMS TAKES A LONG TIME...

2 FACTS:

The industry standard program for manipulating photo images is ADOBE PHOTOSHOP.

The industry standard program for layout and graphics is ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR.

So WHY WASTE YOUR TIME learning dinky amateur programs which are hard to use and can't be used in a professional working environment? [= YOU CAN GET WORK USING THE ADOBE PROGRAMS!!]

We will use Adobe Photoshop CS3 [almost the latest version, which is currently CS5] in your lessons to photo finish your images.

I have been using both programs for 20 years and still haven't learnt all they can do!!

So - at least you will be 'battling away' learning programs that you will use for [probably] the rest of your life!! MAKES A LOT OF SENSE!!

[NOTE: GCG will soon be UPGRADING to ADOBE CS5]

IN PHOTOSHOP You will learn how to:

Crop, burn, dodge, adjust contrast and brighness, colour saturation, hue, levels, etc, etc, plus lots of other 'pro level' (and FUN) tools.

IN ILLUSTRATOR you will learn how to:

make page layouts which include your photos - in whatever form is appropriate: journalistic photo stories, fashion spreads, children's illustrated books, your travel photos in a professional presentation, Christmas and Birthday cards, etc etc etc....

[NOTE: you can also concentrate on LAYOUT AND DESIGN at GCG!! - Make cards, logos, etc.]

ABOUT YOU

What do you like to photograph?

Do you have a camera? If 'YES', what kind of camera and lens do you have?

Can it be used on MANUAL? If “NO” - that’s ok ....

[however, for REAL CONTROL when creating your photos, using the camera on MANUAL is really essential].

Can YOU use your camera’s MANUAL CONTROLS?

If “NO” that’s also ok - that’s one of the essential things I will teach you.

Both FILM cameras or a DIGITAL cameras are ok for your lesson [I use both: all my equipment is Nikon, by the way].

However, DIGITAL is better for study: its cheaper [no film/processing costs] and also more practical: you can see your photos instantly/download directly into your computer.

NOTE: The photo principles are the same for both digital and film.
