TEACHING MATERIALS

GCG produced GUITAR TAB and LYRICS/CHORD pages. SCALES. LEAD BOXES. CHORD SETS. SIMPLIFIED THEORY PAGES. [not simply downloaded from internet, or an independently produced text book]. = GCG's STUDENT PAGES are much more use for students!

GCG recorded WAV PRACTICE TRACKS - DRUMS ONLY. DRUMS PLUS GUITAR. SLOWED TEMPO FOR BEGINNING. PERFORMANCE TEMPO ONCE YOU ARE READY FOR THAT.

WHO CAN STUDY AT GCG?

From BEGINNERS "I never even touched a guitar, man!"....

....to ADVANCED "I know what I know - BUT..."

a/ I just don't understand how or why it all hangs together or works [= you need theory]

b/ I can play flat pick lead, but I want to get into finger picking, harmony lead, etc [= EXPAND your horizons!].

c/ standard tuning don't give me the 'sound' I want [= learn DROP, CROSS and OPEN TUNINGS].

FREE SERVICE - help finding a guitar.

"I DON'T own a guitar!" / "I have an unplayable 'el cheapo' wreck of a guitar!"

Quality DOES matter!

I can look for a guitar in your price range and style of guitar you want. After I find a few guitars that you might like, we make a time and go to the music shops together. You can 'try' each guitar and decide which one you like best. Once you own a decent playable guitar you really can get on with playing!

"I get a THIRSTY during lessons!"

FREE FILTER COFFEE [Goth's blend of Starbucks, Kona flavoured coffees and other brands] for all GCG STUDENTS!

Also, green tea, regular western tea, some herbal teas. And then there's the bottled water..... Wow! Yes! ALL FREE - EVERY LESSON.

Why free? Well, if I went to YOUR place - you wouldn't charge ME for a drink, now would ya? That wouldn't be friendly. 'Nuf said.

WHAT STYLES AND TECHNIQUES DO I TEACH?

Acoustic and electric guitar. Singing. Bass [Note: I am NOT a BASS player. I have a bass at GCG. I use it to record bass on my music backing tracks].

STYLES - I perform and teach: Blues, folk, country, rock, bluegrass, acoustic jazz, funk, pop, rock, reggae, etc etc... I can help you with pretty well everything - playing 40 years you pick up a lot of stuff. I am NOT a 'shred to die, super fast lead player'.

Playing Techniques:

RIGHT HAND: flat picking, finger style, pick plus fingers - [ex: Jimmy Page uses this 'pick plus fingers' technique in Stairway to Heaven].

LEFT HAND: 'good position', playing 'out of position' [but not getting lost]. Chords, scales, boxes, rhythm, lead.....

THEORY:

Musical terminology, scales - melodic major and minor, both pure and synthetic modes, chords, relative notes and chords.

Structure of chords. Structure of scales. Stucture of songs [chord progressions].

[NOTE: don't worry - the theory I teach is ALL COMPLETELY NECESSARY AND RELEVANT to help YOU PLAY BETTER and UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE PLAYING. = NOT 'pie-in-the-sky' theory for the sake of theory. Dig?]

GOTH PERFORMING VIDEOS

Note for LEFT HANDERS:

Actually, I am left handed. However I play guitar in the standard way [not re-strung for left hand].

Either way of playing is ok here at GCG. Tip: it takes BOTH HANDS to play guitar = don' matter which way.

julie with electric guitar

BRING YER AXE? - your choice.

I have a small body acoustic, a standard size acoustic [with cut away] (both steel strings), a Fender Strat and a bass guitar here for students to use.

If a student WANTs to lug their own guitars along - that's cool.

LIVE PERFORMANCE PRACTICE EVERY LESSON!

LESSON guitars and mics [for singers] plug into one of my 3 Mackie pro level mixers, then into my JBL Eon 1 250watt amp speakers. [NOT turned right up, yo!] This gives you the 'feel' of 'performing'. It also gives you the experience of using guitar effects pedals [Boss ME - 80] plus in line tuners and gets you 'used to' hearing yourself amplified - can be off-putting until you get used to it.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ MUSIC at GCG!

TAB [a way of writing music for guitars - written on the page in a way that directly represents where the notes are on the neck of the guitar, by referencing the STRING and the FRET NUMBER. So, very 'visual' and easy to understand.]

I have 2 ring binders FULL of alphabetically filed TAB of the songs [mainly the popular standard songs that guitar players really want to learn, PLUS some VERY bizarre stuff, specialized stuff, that I AIN'T EVEN HEARD OF THE GROUP, let alone the SONG!!]. I will write TAB for songs you are learning, either during your lesson by hand, or if it is a popular song and good for lots of other students, I will make TAB in the computer [= a better presentation of the TAB]. I also make Lyrics with chords pages of popular songs.

I will give you a FREE A4 RING BINDER with section tabs for: THEORY. CHORDS. SCALES. JAMS ['jams' ar not cover songs. They are repeating chord progressions for players to 'improvise' over] and SONGS [put cover songs or your own original songs in here].

Also, FREE PRACTICE TRACKS so you can listen and study at home. WAV files ready to copy onto your USB memory stick or portable drive.

I can also record something we are studying [either before your lesson, or even during it!] and then

convert it into a 'music' track file [wav file].

Bring in your USB MEMORY STICK and we can give you a free copy.

You take it home.

You can listen to the WAV FILES and play along and practice at home!!!

The wav files help you learn the nuances of what I taught during the lesson [that can't be 'written' in TAB].

teacher pedals with guitar student

See all the pedals? The space in the middle is where I sit when I am teaching. I use these pedals to LIVE record/playback rifs and songs at a SLOW TEMPO to suit the level of the student. I also use the rythmn [drums] machine as a 'metronome' - much better than 'click click click click' at 120bpm.

LOOK MOM! NO MUSIC!

I will also show you how to listen to your favourite songs and work 'em out by ear.

A big part of what I teach is showing my students how to 'rip off' their favourite guitarists.

By using U Tube or listening to a cd IN YOUR LESSON, I can almost always:

listen to your favourite songs [even if I have NEVER HEARD THEM BEFORE] and in a couple of minutes [before your amazed ears]

work out: the KEY, the CHORDS, the STYLE and other useful stuff [ex: are they playing bar chords, or using a CAPO and playing open chords? etc..].

Many students are a little 'disappointed' when the song they warned me was "maybe too hard for you to work out" could be unravelled so quickly. This is NOT MEANT AS A BOAST - its simply me USING what I want to teach YOU how to do.

Most music is BASED ON A FEW VERY SIMPLE FORMATS. I'll show 'em to you, as you study. Soon you will begin to recognise them and therefore either play covers quicker or create your own originals faster!! Now - that's sounds like what its supposed to be all about, right?!!

GIVE IT A SHOT!

ABOUT ME!

I am GOTH CARTER, a professional performer and university trained TEACHER [Bachelor of Art Education].

So all the lessons are based on my own playing style [including the theory behind it].

Lessons are planned, with study notes given plus LOTS OF REVIEW of previously learned stuff - cos we all forget new stuff, or understand it, but can't apply it at first, right?!!

I TAUGHT GUITAR before I came to Japan.

GCG [in Osaka Japan] began in 2003, so I have a lot of experience teaching guitar [and photography, design using Illustrator and Photoshop, video and of course English].

I am mainly 'self taught'. However, I have also had lessons or help over the 40 years I have been playing from:

Jeff Skunk Baxter [STEELY DAN, DOOBIE BROS]

Joe Walsh: [EAGLES, Joe Walsh band]

Colin Watson [musical director and country lead player for Australia's father of Country Music: SLIM DUSTY]

Dan Johnson [singer song writer]

FINALLY on GUITAR:

Studying SHORT CUTS the learning process!!

Take lessons with me so YOU don't have to spend the next 40 YEARS getting to where I am now!

PERFORMANCE VIDEO OF GOTH'S SOLO MUSIC SHOW

CHANGE TO A DIFFERENT STUDY SUBJECT - OK!!

LOTS OF CHOICES!

If you have interest in studying PHOTOGRAPHY or LAYOUT & DESIGN or ENGLISH

you can change [even for only a month] to those classes. Study for as long as you like. Switch again! No problem!

NOTE: Because the Guitar, Photogaphy and Layout & Design lessons are spoken in ENGLISH,

this is a GREAT CHANCE to IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH while you are studying. [Also, I speak intermediate level Japanese, so if it helps our communication, I might sometimes speak in Japanese - if you want.]

VIDEO - PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC

WANNA BE A MEGA MOGUL GUITAR GURU?

A typical case study:

This is .... well, let's just call him 'Dave'.

'Dave' wants to become a GUITAR STUDENT at GCG [Goth Carter Group]'s school.

Of course, like all GCG WANNABE GUITAR STUDENTS, he is clearly already a CUT ABOVE THE AVERAGE REGULAR DUDE! [see photos]

before guitar study guy 1 photos

"Let's just call him 'Dave'"

FIRST - THE ENTRANCE EXAM....

Question: "Dave, do you already have a guitar?"

before guitar study 2 photo

"Ah.... a 'GUITAR' Dave. Do - you - have - a -..... hey, can someone give him another jolt with the cattle prod please...

Ok - let's start with an easier question....."

[Later in the initial interview]

"Would you say you have a 'musical ear' Dave? I mean: can you hear the difference in pitch between musical notes?"

before guitar study 3 photo

'"No - Sorry Dave, cotton buds are NOT included in Guitar lessons."

MUCH LATER.....

DAVE = SUCCESSFUL ENTRANT INTO

THE GCG SCHOOL OF GUITAR!...

Anyway, 'Dave' [not his real name, ok!] DID start coming to lessons.....

And after a while, Dave learned: to RECOGNIZE A GUITAR!!!... at close distances [see next photo].

guitar study guy point photo

"Very good Dave! 'G-U-I-T-A-R'. Ah - don't bite, please, Dave! Down Boy!!"

This is a good start!

Eventually I hope Dave will progress to successfully complete the: "Identifying guitars at 10 paces" unit [GCG Advanced students ONLY!].

TIME PASSES.....

PHOTO guitar student studying at gcg

Dave is settling in to the lessons [nurse, give him another pill please].

SLOWLY, CHANGES BEGIN TO OCCUR....

IMPROVEMENT.....

The student learns to COPY the MASTER......

photo guitar student and teacher

MORE TIME PASSES.....

CHANGES OCCUR...............

AH...................

.............PERFECTION!!!

SO..... How did 'Dave' progress?

Did he learn anything?

Can he now control his tendency to slobber?......

YOU BE THE JUDGE!!.....

Here is 'Dave' today:....

guitar monster photo

"Good job Dave! Ah - Dave.... can you try NOT to get TOO attached to your instrument please!

I said 'Nice lick!' ... No Dave - Don't LICK IT! No - you can't use my hanky.....

Down Boy!! ..... Can someone give Dave his medication please..... NURSE!!!!........"

[Although the character Dave is a tongue in cheek caricature, GCG's sincere thanks to this 'real' guitar student - his name protected for his own safety [ha ha], who offered to model for these photos. Yes - there' a lot of LOVE here at GCG!! Not to mention 'comedy'.... Ah... there's nothing like comedy!! [And this ain't NOTHING LIKE comedy! boom boom].
